Sleep Apnea Treatment in Franklin

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Franklin

Sleep apnea treatment in Franklin does not always require a machine. Sleep apnea appliances all work by advancing your lower jaw forward of its normal position, which keeps the airway open while the muscles of the throat relax during sleep. For many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or those who cannot tolerate CPAP, a custom oral appliance is a workable alternative.

At Bluegrass Oral Health–Franklin/Towe Dentistry & Aesthetic Center, we make those appliances and manage their fit, in coordination with the physician who provides your diagnosis.

What Obstructive Sleep Apnea Does

During sleep, the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax. In some people they relax enough to narrow or block the airway repeatedly through the night. Each event interrupts breathing and pulls you briefly out of deep sleep, often without your ever waking fully.

The result is exhaustion that does not improve with more hours in bed, and, over time, added strain on the heart and cardiovascular system.

Signs Worth Discussing

  • Loud, habitual snoring
  • A partner who has noticed you stop breathing
  • Waking with a dry mouth, sore throat, or headache
  • Daytime sleepiness despite adequate time in bed
  • Difficulty concentrating or unusual irritability
  • Worn teeth or clenching, which often accompany airway problems

Dentists frequently spot the oral signs first. What we cannot do is diagnose the condition — that requires a sleep study ordered and interpreted by a physician.

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Franklin With Oral Appliances

Once you have a diagnosis, our doctors evaluate whether your teeth, gums, and jaw joints can support an appliance. It looks somewhat like two thin retainers connected so the lower jaw is held slightly forward, and it is made from records of your bite so it fits precisely.

After delivery, we adjust the amount of advancement gradually, checking comfort and asking about symptoms. Your physician confirms effectiveness with follow-up testing. We then see you periodically to check the appliance, your bite, and the health of your jaw joints.

Advantages and Honest Limitations

An oral appliance is quiet, portable, requires no electricity, and needs no mask or hose — real advantages for travel and for patients who have given up on CPAP. It is easier to be consistent with, and consistency is what makes any treatment work.

It is not the right answer for everyone. Severe apnea often still calls for CPAP, and some patients do best with a combination. Our doctors will tell you plainly where your case falls rather than selling an appliance that will not do the job.
