Wisdom Teeth Removal in Munfordville
Wisdom teeth removal in Munfordville is one of the more common procedures we perform, most often for teenagers and young adults in their late teens and early twenties. Timing matters: roots are shorter and bone is more forgiving at that age, and recovery is usually easier.
At Bluegrass Oral Health Center–Munfordville we evaluate with imaging, explain exactly what we see, and remove wisdom teeth only when there is a reason to.
Why Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems
Third molars arrive last, usually between the ages of 17 and 25, and most jaws no longer have room for them. A tooth that cannot fully erupt may come in at an angle, press against the neighboring molar, or stay partly covered by gum tissue where bacteria collect and cannot be cleaned out.
That is how impacted wisdom teeth lead to infections, decay in the second molar, cysts, and crowding pressure — often before there is any pain at all.

Signs It Is Time for an Evaluation
- Aching or pressure at the very back of the jaw
- Red, swollen, or tender gum tissue behind the last molar
- Repeated infections or a bad taste coming from that area
- Difficulty opening fully or swelling in the jaw
- Food that constantly packs behind the second molar
Plenty of wisdom teeth cause no symptoms and still need to come out because of what the X-ray shows. The opposite is also true — fully erupted, cleanable wisdom teeth can stay.
The Procedure
We start with imaging to map each tooth's position and its relationship to the nerve and sinus. Straightforward extractions are done with local anesthesia; impacted teeth may require a small incision and sectioning of the tooth so it can be removed through a smaller opening.
Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available for patients who want them, and for complex cases our Bowling Green and South Warren offices offer IV sedation within the same practice group.
Recovery and Aftercare
Expect swelling to peak around the second or third day and then improve steadily. Ice for the first day, then moist heat. Soft foods, plenty of fluids, and no straws, smoking, or vigorous rinsing for the first several days — that is what protects the clot and prevents a dry socket.
Most young patients are back to school or work within two to three days. You will go home with written instructions, and a member of our team is reachable if anything concerns you during healing.
L-PRF for Faster Healing
For surgical extractions we may recommend L-PRF, a technique that concentrates healing factors from a small sample of your own blood and places them in the extraction site. Patients often report less swelling and a smoother recovery.
