Sleep Apnea Treatment in Smiths Grove

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Smiths Grove

Sleep apnea treatment in Smiths Grove often begins in a dental chair, because dentists notice the signs first — worn teeth, a scalloped tongue, a narrow airway, and a patient who says they never wake up rested.

At Bluegrass Oral Health Center–Smiths Grove we screen for sleep-disordered breathing and, working with your physician, provide custom oral appliances for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or those who cannot tolerate CPAP.

What Obstructive Sleep Apnea Is

During sleep, the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax. In obstructive sleep apnea they collapse far enough to block airflow repeatedly through the night. Each pause ends with a brief arousal the sleeper rarely remembers.

The result is sleep that never reaches its deeper stages, and a cardiovascular system under strain from repeated drops in oxygen. Untreated sleep apnea is associated with high blood pressure, heart problems, and daytime accidents.

Signs We Look For

  • Loud snoring, often reported by a partner
  • Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Waking with a dry mouth, sore throat, or headache
  • Daytime sleepiness despite a full night in bed
  • Trouble concentrating or unusual irritability
  • Teeth worn flat from nighttime clenching

A diagnosis requires a sleep study ordered and interpreted by a physician. Our role is to recognize the signs, get you to the right evaluation, and treat with an appliance when that is the appropriate therapy.

Oral Appliance Therapy

A custom oral appliance looks something like a sports mouthguard but works by holding the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, keeping the airway open. It is quiet, portable, needs no power, and travels easily.

For many patients with mild to moderate apnea, an appliance is an accepted alternative to CPAP. For patients with severe apnea who cannot tolerate their machine, it is often better than no treatment at all — a decision we make together with your physician.

Who Is a Candidate

You need a diagnosis, enough healthy teeth to anchor the appliance, and reasonable jaw joint health. We evaluate all three before recommending treatment.

Patients with significant TMJ problems may need those addressed first. We check the joints carefully, since an appliance repositioning the jaw all night should not create a new problem while solving another.

The Treatment Process

After reviewing your sleep study, we scan or impress your teeth and record the jaw position. The laboratory fabricates the appliance, and we fit it at a second visit, showing you how to insert, adjust, and clean it.

Over the following weeks we advance the jaw position gradually until symptoms improve. Your physician may order a follow-up sleep study with the appliance in place to confirm it is working, and we see you regularly to check fit and bite.

Protecting Your Teeth and Jaw

Any appliance worn nightly needs monitoring. We check the fit, the bite, and the health of the jaw joints at your regular visits, and we adjust the appliance when your teeth or restorations change.

Patients who both clench and have apnea sometimes need a design that manages both, and we plan for that rather than layering two appliances. Cleaning instructions are simple, and a well-maintained appliance typically lasts several years.
